Anuhea Flowers was founded in early 1994 when Bill and Judy Mertens leased 12.5 acres of land on the beautiful island of Maui in northern Hawaii from a family who met in the pineapple business. They have a large area to plant and are eager to diversify from herds of cattle and give Bill an opportunity to grow flowers in a new environment and ensure the future agricultural environment for their land. Bill chose Kings, 24 Needles, Hunting Sunset, Pink Ice, and Mayday as his initial crops, and it soon became apparent that they would thrive. Anuhea Flowers Knows that in the following years, he diversified the variety of protea, with a total of 25 varieties, and became a major supplier of protea in Hawaii. The first bumper harvest occurred in 1996, when 195,000 stems were harvested that year. By 1999 they were one of the larger producers of Hawaiian protea.
