Plans have been in the works to restore the historic warbird to flying status in order to serve as a flying museum ever since Tony Mazzolini discovered Doc sitting and rotting away in the Mojave Desert in 1987. Hundreds of volunteers have worked on Doc and the restoration project for more than 15 years.
