Longtime friends Matt Howell and Kelly Andrews, who have a shared enthusiasm for excellent distilled spirits and difficult undertakings, founded Chuckanut Bay Distillery in 2011. They chose a place in downtown Bellingham and went about getting the required federal, state, and local permits, furnishing the space and buying the required equipment. Chuckanut Bay Distillery finally released their first spirit, a potato vodka created from Yukon Gold potatoes farmed in the Skagit Valley, two long years later, in late 2013. At the time, neither they had nor could they afford an electric grinder. Thus, Matt used Kelly's old apple grinder and a bicycle frame to crush almost 13, 000 pounds of potatoes. A double gold medal from the New York International Spirits competition recognized his pedalling efforts.
