Hollycombe takes its name from the 4,000-acre estate a century ago, much of which can be seen from the Quarry railroad. Around this time, the exquisite garden was planted with over a million trees. In 1951, the late John Baldock and his family bought the estate and began steam collection through them. Mr Baldock developed an early love for steam power and, after the second world war, realised that many road steam engines were being scrapped, so saving them at a very early age was not just junk. The first engine to arrive was the Burrell tractor no. 2 sunset, which has been operating at Hollycombe for more than 50 years. In the 1960s, under the onslaught of gasoline and diesel trucks, chrome plates and loud speakers, he began to preserve the traditional fairground rides, and then these elaborate rides and organs and their engines disappeared.
