The entrance to the hotel includes a beautiful winding driveway that cuts through hundreds of acres of grass and forest. Their relaxing restaurant offers breathtaking views of tranquil mirror lake. In the language of the winnibago indians, it means "alone." The symbol of the name is the rock extending into the still waters of mirror lake. Ishnala was a ceremonial site for the winnibago people long before the first settlers arrived. In 1826, pioneers bought it from the winnebago tribe and built a wooden trading post. In 1909, the colmans bought the cottage and built their dream home. The original stone fireplace, wooden walls and stairs are still part of the restaurant building. In 1953, the hoffman brothers bought the land and built it as it is now.
