Jenner's history began in 1867, when John Rule bought 4,000 acres of the California coast from the Spanish as part of a land grant. The writer Charles Jenner asked Rule for permission to build on the land. The place where Jenner built her house, called Jenner Gulch, is now the main hub of Jenner Inn’s town. After building the house in 1904, Mr. Jenner went on to build a lumber mill to supply Santa Rosa and San Francisco. A hotel and a post office were set up shortly thereafter. The plant was the main source of wood used in the reconstruction of San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake.
