Growth and expansion highlight the history of The Mizzou Store. In 1899, the University of Missouri President R. H. Jesse convened a committee of seven teachers to create a student bookstore. The committee proposes to open a store owned and operated by students and supervised by the board of directors. The store has a room in the academic hall (now Jessie Hall), and each founder donated $100 to create a venture capital fund. University cooperative stores have prospered for many years as a source of books and supplies, as well as providing employment opportunities for students. By 1940, the store was no longer able to meet the needs of an expanding campus. At the time, the co-op was dissolved and its ownership and assets were returned to the curators of the University of Missouri. The bookstore was later renamed the university bookstore as The Mizzou Store and eventually became a university bookstore.
