In 2016, a friend's birthday party served as the inspiration for them. They were looking for a web solution that could retrieve and display photos and videos stored in the cloud as well as posts from social media. Slidesome couldn't find a solution that could combine content from social media with cloud storage like Dropbox and Google Drive, and the ones that were available were either too expensive or didn't work as well as expected. As a result, they decided that they needed to be created to fill this market gap. In 2019, Slidesome was awarded a project grant of two years from the Technology Development Fund (Tkniróunarsjóur). The fund's purpose is to provide funding for research and development projects with the goal of fostering innovation in Icelandic industry. It's a competitive fund with two calls for proposals per year.
