Maltings tavern was built in 1868 as part of Ebenezer William Hurlock’s brewery at The Maltings, Ely's Waterside, where locally grown barley is malted and brewed. The hall was originally three separate floors in which barley was added to the water and then stored on the first and second floors before being passed on to the drying kiln, which is now the site of the stage. The building was absorbed by Watney Mann (East Anglia) LTD through various ownership, including the 1961 company Steward and Patterson (The Maltings, Ely) LTD. In 1971, the building was made available to the Erie city council at minimal cost, and city hall converted the building into a public hall. Stewart and Patterson’s original pub logo is Glazier's Arms, while the Montagu Arms are still in the building.
