Tyler Civic Theatre grew out of a small theater founded in 1927. Stage performances take place on the podium at Taylor High School and on the stage of the Women's Building on South Broadway. In 1939, the Little Theater built its own building on the corner of Houston and Glenwood Streets. During World War II, performances ceased and the building was sold, with the proceeds being placed in trust for the city of Tyler. Al Gilliam organized the amphitheater at Tyler Junior College to stage productions in front of audiences.
