Although they officially marked 1999 as the start of Vermeil Wines, they actually had to go further to find the start. Vermeil Wines began in three generations, when Dick Vermeil's great-grandparents, Garibaldi Iaccheri and Jean Louis Vermeil, both young men, moved to the United States in the late 1800s and settled in San Francisco. Both were successful businessmen and developed a friendship, eventually including the Iaccheri family who introduced the Vermeil family to Calistoga. Garibaldi and his wife set up a second home in a town 75 miles north of the city. The area is reminiscent of his childhood in lucca, Italy. By the turn of the century, the laccheri family owned as many as 20 plots of land in Calistoga. Garibaldi used property eventually owned by the Frediani family to create one of the region's first Wine companies, the Calistoga Wine Company.
